#1 Potty Training Mistake

I bet that the #1 potty training mistake is going to be really surprising, and like a large amount of people, you may think that I am wrong… The #1 potty training mistakes is actually using pee pads. I know that you have either used these in the past, or are thinking about using them now. And it may be tempting — you don’t want to leave you dog or puppy at home all day without access to the bathroom, because you’re going to be at work. So, it may seem smart to lay down a pee pad; but this is actually confusing for your dog. And, it can lead to more accidents than you may think.  I challenge you, if you don’t believe me, to pick up a blacklight and walk around your house or apartment. If there are bright spots, it is likely that your dog has been using the carpet as their restroom this entire time.

Potty Training for Dogs

So, there are actually 3 main reasons that pee pads don’t work for potty training. First off, let me backtrack a little and explain how I define potty training. Potty training is when you want your dog to pee and poop outside consistently.  In this episode of the Naughty Dog Podcast, I break down why pee pads are a huge potty training no-no. To sum it up, pee pads don’t work because:

  1. Your dog cannot discriminate the cotton pad from the cotton rugs you have
  2. You are teaching your dog to pee and poop in your house
  3. Dogs don’t like to pee and poop in the same place

Best Way to Potty Train Dogs

Now that I’ve completely shattered your way of looking at pee pads and potty training your dog, let me offer you a solution. Use fake grass or a real grass patch.  This still offers you an alternative to pee pads, you can still lay this down and it gives your puppy/dog a place to relieve himself while you are out. However, it actually makes the transition from using the potty inside to going potty outside.
