Crate Training for Dogs and Puppies – Why Do They Need It
There is a common misconception as to why dogs and puppies need to be crate trained. Many make the mistake of thinking that it’s only for potty training, and I almost never recommend a crate for potty training. If you misuse the crate you can create aggression, get a hyper dog or an obessive compulive pee-er.
Using a crate with a puppy or an adult dog allow you to create a safe place when you can’t supervise your dog. Using a crate can also help dogs that are frightened of people because it gives them a safe place to relax.
Using the crate correctly and understanding the Do’s and Don’ts will make your life easier.
Do’s of Crate Training Dogs
- All dogs should be crate trained
- Use a crate for dogs/puppies that are worried or have anxiety around strangers/guests
- Use a crate when on vacation at an Airbnb
- Use a crate when having repairs/renovations done at your house
- Use a crate when your dog is injured
- Always leave water in the crate
- Feed your dog in the crate if you have multiple dogs
Learn the why behind all of the Do’s in this episode of the Naughty Dog Podcast. You’ll also learn the Do’s I still use with my 10-year-old dogs.
Crate Training Dont’s
If you’re a responsible dog owner, and I know that you are if you’re reading this, then you want to make sure that you do this crate thing right. I love that about you!! I hate making mistakes too, although I’ve made a few. Understand the Don’ts are just as important so that you don’t create an aggressive or hyper dog.
- Don’t leave your dog in the crate for more than 5 hours
- Don’t use a divider or leave your dog in a crate that is too small
- Don’t use a crate as punishment
- Don’t let your puppy cry it out in the crate
- Don’t expect that your dog is going to automatically love the crate
- Don’t let your kids crawl in the crate while your dog is in it
Crate Training Dogs – In Conclusion
I know you may be saying, “Whats the big deal? So, my kids like cuddling my dog in the crate”
or
“She’s been crying for like 20 minutes, she’ll stop eventually.”
The problem is that you are teaching your dog bad habits. If you’ve established the crate as a safe space, having your kids invade that space can lead your dog to bite if he feels trapped. And letting your puppy out after crying for 20 minutes reinforces the crying in the crate for 20 long minutes, verses letting him out sooner. You need to crate train him so that he doesn’t cry at all and The Dog Academy can teach you how-to do that.
Now that you know the big Do’s and Don’ts what did you learn that you didn’t know before?
