Barking can be one of the largest frustrations as a dog owner, especially when you can’t understand why your dog is barking. Surprisingly, there are 7 main reasons why dogs bark.

#1. Guard Dog Barking

Guard dog barking, also known as protective barking, is typically barking done from behind a barrier. This could be your dog barking from inside of the house or behind a fence. 

Some business owners tend to use guard dogs and don’t see the barking as an issue. But, if you are not looking to have your dog bark all the time, you may want to figure out why your dog is guard dog barking. 

 

#2. Excitement Barking

Excitement barking is pretty typical, and I don’t really have clients that want to control this type of barking. This is barking that occurs when your dog is happy or excited, seen when they are playing with a toy, outside at the park, or when you come home. 

 

#3. Fear Barking

Fear barking is when your dog is frightened, and they tend to growl and back away. This is typically a warning that they are trying to get more distance between themselves and the object of their fear. 

 

#4. Reactive Dog Barking

Reactive dog barking, also known as leash aggression, is when your dog starts lunging and barking when on the leash. This could be to another person, dog, biker, car, etc. 

This is one of the most common types of barking, but can also lead to more aggression if not handled properly. 

 

#5. Home Alone Barking

Home alone barking can happen for two reasons: intermittent (due to sound) or separation anxiety. Intermittent barking occurs when your dog hears a sound and reacts. This is common and not usually an issue. However, separation anxiety can cause your dog to have a panic attack, where they are barking, and pacing, either because they are home alone or because they are separated from a specific human.  

 

#6. Boredom Barking

Boredom barking, is just that, they are bored. Your dog does not have enough stimulation or is under exercised, and is just barking to fill the time. 

 

#7. Demand Barking

Demand barking is usually obvious, though the cause may not be. This is when your dog is looking directly at you while barking, which can be mildly frustrating if you are not sure what they want. 

This can be because they are hungry, want attention, or want you to play with them.
