Before your Consultation:
A behavior consultation is an analytical tool that, in combination with medical evaluations and the animal’s history can point toward a prognosis. Training and behavior modification are recommended, based on the prognosis, but as a separate service. There are no guarantees with training or behavior modification, and it is important for pet parents and all members of the household understand that the success of training and behavior modification requires a commitment from everyone.
During the initial consultation, you will receive immediate management and behavior suggestions to help you manage and prevent the unwanted behaviors from becoming stronger or more practiced. It will then be your responsibility to seek treatment via training and behavior modification, either with All About Training Dogs LLC or another trainer.
Day of the consult:
1. If your dog has any diet restrictions, please inform me ahead of time. I use mostly high-end food, including turkey and chicken.
2. Please do not feed your dog a full meal as I will be feeding him/her during the visit. This is important, as I need to see your dog’s stress level, and whether or not he/she can eat is an important investigative tool.
- Please do not have your dog on a choke chain, pinch collar or electric collar of any type.
- Your dog should be secured in a safe and enclosed area before I arrive. I will inform you when to
bring the dog in. I do not need to “see or experience” the behavior first-hand to help your dog. It’s more important that I can see your dog’s trainability and that is difficult to judge when a dog has exploded or imploded.
5. Please make sure the television, cell phone and or anything else that may distract you from being focused on your dog during the visit are Off or on silent.
6. When possible, I will video tape you and your dog so I can later look at the behaviors and the body language your dog uses to better form an opinion and for educational reasons.
7. If children are part of the dog’s behavior problem, I would like to have them in the room at some point. In general, your children may watch and be involved during the consultation as long as they are not taking your attention away from your dog or our conversation. This is very important if there has been a history of aggression.
