[Podcast 6]: 3 Things that Control Your Dog’s Behavior

Dog owners with challenging dogs make the mistake of thinking that their dog’s problems are a result of circumstance. They feel stuck and unable to change their dog. You may say things like, “my dog hates his crate and he’ll never like it” or “my dog hates the car” or “my dog isn’t friendly.”

I understand why you might think that, because I use to feel that same way with my dogs.

I thought that their behavior was a part of their breed or that they were broken, different and unchangeable.

Someone even told me that Italian Greyhounds couldn’t be potty trained and I believed it even AFTER both of mine her potty training.

If you want to enjoy an easy life with a dog that listens, then you need to understand the 3 things that control his behavior. You’ll be surprised how his breed has very little to do with his behavior.

Yep, I’m saying that ALL Golden Retrievers aren’t the perfect family dog. And that Pit Bulls are ALL mean aggressive dogs.

Dogs learn more from their environment than from genetics. In fact, it’s your dog’s environment and his surroundings will trigger or NOT trigger a gene to function. That means that YOU have control of what happens and that you can CHANGE his behavior. You’re not stuck!

It’s a HUGE misconception that behavior is 100% genetic and if you continue to believe that you can’t change your dog, then you’ll live feel stuck and a victim of circumstance. The average size dog lives 12 years. Do you want to be stuck for the next 12 years, 10 years or even for one more year (that’s 365 days of feeling stuck!).

You can change your dog right now!!  BUT it starts with YOU not with your dog. If you don’t believe that he can change, then he won’t.

If you do believe that he can change, then you can easily change his environment and learning history.

Listen to this episode of the Naughty Dog Podcast and learn how your dogs learning history and his environment effect how your dog acts.  Then ask yourself, what YOU have control and what you can change.

Spoiler alert – you can change just about anything when it comes to your dogs behavior. I did!  And now you can to.
